The Canary Islands' marine ecosystem’s geographical, oceanographic, physical and bionomic characteristics make its marine resources extremely diverse, but also very fragile. One factor that conditions this ecosystem’s makeup is the seabed’s steep slopes and resulting small insular platforms, which limits the habitable surface area of the coastal species that live there (red seabream, parrot fish, comber, grouper or comb grouper) but also favours the presence of pelagic species (tuna, sardines or mackerel).
